Underground Chapel
Bergamo, Italy
This project is located in the Cimitero Monumentale of Bergamo and regards a chapel that forms part of an underground burial complex and its external area.
The latter is characterised by a large sculptural group dating to the 1950s by sculptor Tobia Vescovi consisting of three figures representing the values of Family, Faith and Work.
The chapel is designed as a genuine marble room which is accessed via a wrought iron gate with details in handcrafted brass. Together with the client, we chose timeless noble materials finely processed by local workers: Calacatta Macchia Vecchia marble, wrought iron and cast brass. The forms of the gate and the external fence are inspired by the world of nature: their design consists of a stylised tulip module from which orders of small arches and volutes emanate.
